OMG — I do this! I never really gave it much thought until you said it. I take turns writing and editing as I go and when I do those first rounds of edits, I find that I wrote subconsciously, but then when I get back to it, I'm basically arguing with a version of myself over why I was drawn to write what I did. Sometimes this leads to me labeling it as filler and other times, I expand on it finding new threads to build a better and more colorful tapestry.
