Always thought McCarthy’s prose could be way smoother. I’ve read writers who go long and fast, and they glide way more than he does. But reading him is like running your hand down a broomstick with little slits chopped into it or like feeling the edges of a finished puzzle. You catch every break. Half the time, I can’t even tell if it’s fast or slow. Gotta read it again. Can’t even explain it. Feels like he wrote and rewrote, picking every word on its own. And then most of it, two- or three-syllable words... ninety percent of a novel.

No clue how he makes me love him that much. The guy was unreal. And I really appreciate you helping me get this stuff. Keep it up.

I know what you mean. There are repeated stylistic choices that seem intentionally jarring.

Appreciate the reply, man.

He must have felt it too. You’d think stringing a bunch of English words together in a more familiar way would streamline the reader through his complex thoughts, but no. I guess he wasn’t the type to finish his sentences for himself. Bet there are words in his books that have never even been near each other before. 🙏

I always want to write some pithy comment after reading these, but I have to sit with all the info you just related. (Then I don't say anything, because someone else likely said it. ) So I'll just say I am a Hellboy fan. I keep putting off buying print. Maybe I will stop doing that.

I need to share something else and thank you for the comment. Just about every essay or story feels like the one where I've lost everyone's interest. The initial silence is just so hard, and your comment broke that silence today. Thank you.

We are all drinking out of a firehose here. SO much to read and learn and write. Some days I am out of words, so I simply "heart" stuff. I read it all. I try not to use my phone for that, because I don't want to emoji people to death. It's not the same. I don't think there's a lack of interest. I sometimes think, and I don't know how you manage this with every post, but there is a lot to think over. A lot of info. You are challenging and it's possible we have to switch gears to read what you write. Don't change anything. That challenge is needed. I need how I view writing sat on its ear sometimes. No one else that I've read is providing similar learning opportunities. You keep writing you.

I'm always thrilled to find another fan.
