I don't paywall the current project. I only place things in the vault when they are complete, and I publish them as an ebook or paperback.

I thank my new subscribers and work hard for my old subscribers.

"If they’re fans of your work and can afford it..."

Thank you so much for not stopping that sentence after "fans of your work". Given I'm currently worried about if my husband and I are gonna be able to afford to pay our mortgage due to a job loss, I've been more aware of a lack of acknowledging that some people just can't afford to pay for things. I see lots of people griping about how to get paid subscribers and why won't people upgrade, and the simple answer may just be "I can't afford it."

One day I hope to make some money from writing interesting or useful experiences that may help others. I started a free newsletter here and only recently put a pledge box on. Since I’m writing a memoir and had a few readers interest in Part 1 I have been considering making Part 2 a paid subscription. I’ve read it takes a long time to capture readers and I totally believe that as I have only 46 readers at the moment that I sincerely appreciate. I subscribed to Substack as a lifetime member. And I individually pay out about a total of $400 annually to writers I enjoy reading and/or help me learn here. Can I afford it, nope. Since I’m on a limited income and have a mountain of debt. I can’t physically work any longer from my permanent disability status the last 10 years, so I turned to my lifelong dream of becoming a writer after much encouragement from family and friends who have been recipients of my creative and at times reality writing. Most days I feel like I have nothing to offer anyone and myself through writing is not enough. Yet I can’t stop myself from writing. It’s almost like I have a third hand putting my fingertips to a keyboard and I have no control over its actions. It’s frustrating and worrisome that I have yet to discover what I have to offer by writing things that people are truly interested in, since my skills are limited in everything technological and that area is on a very fast track. I try to keep up by my age I think holds me back. I turned 71 this year well past my prime, but I want to stay in the mix so I read a variety of writers on SubStack and Medium and watch videos trying to learn as much as my cell depleted brain will absorb. I am not a quitter by nature so I keep pursuing my goals. I know I don’t have much time left before everything turns to crap in my head as it has in my body so I sometimes lose patience with myself. I hope I haven’t bored anyone here with my “confession” and I do appreciate the space here to respond to your Terrific article here. I am amazed at how many things you can manage at once and I am always grateful for finding and subscribing to you for I value each area you give here. You are truly an asset to all your readers and subscribers. Thank you for all you share with us.
